Doing Business with China

China affects business for almost every company on the planet. Global politics, manufacturing, technology, migrant communities, markets and resources, and international students are just a few of the ways that China has likely impacted your business already.

The purpose of SRI’s Doing Business in China course is to introduce cultural differences and unique corporate circumstances present in doing business with contemporary China, both within and outside of the mainland.

Managing a business that deals with China requires an understanding of competing and/or contradictory dynamics, e.g. collective culture and individual needs, Chinese law and international standards, international products and localized markets, a common language but diverse population—this course is an introduction to both what some of these issues are as well as an opportunity to understand what has been done in the past, both successfully and unsuccessfully, to manage them.

The course will discuss timely business-related issues common when doing business with China, from the perspective of a foreign business. Course content includes entry and exit strategies, sourcing from China, the last decade of increasing regulatory crack-downs, the recovery from Covid Zero and its abrupt end, decoupling/derisking, China for China, domestic and international Chinese brands (i.e. Shien, Alibaba, Didi, TikTok, Huawei, WeChat, BYD, CATL, et al), a China’s international influence, and trade wars, to name a few.

Developing Business in China will focus on working in China as well as working with Chinese individuals, Chinese companies in and out of the Mainland. Each module will include opinions and experiences from a number of China-professionals with direct experience in China.

The course is based on 10 modules that each teach specific skills through case studies, media reports, and personal experiences.

Doing Business with ASEAN

ASEAN is home to one of the largest middle classes on the planet and is increasingly important for both manufacturing and global supply chains. And Chinese migrants and investments add to the vibrant business communities and opportunities.

ASEAN is one of the most diverse regions on the planet, and to be successful, Doing Business in ASEAN requires a high level of CQ (Cultural Intelligence). SRI’s DBi ASEAN course is designed to both familiarize foreign professionals with the region and help professionals implement proven country-specific strategies for optimal success.

SRI’s DBi ASEAN course teaches cultural, legal, governmental, and professional aspects of doing business in the ASEAN region from the perspective of a foreign company entering into ASEAN for the first time. Modules address country-specific details and the dynamics of localized business cultures and business and personal relationships

Topics come from SRI’s own and client experiences in ASEAN and include concepts such as the influence of Islamic Finance in island Southeast Asia, navigating hierarchy in Thai culture, the role of overseas Chinese in regional business, and government-business relations in Vietnam, regional instability and logistics.

SRI’s team have lived, worked, studied, and taught (and vacationed!) in ASEAN countries. The course capitalizes on decades of professional experience and client successes in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao, and Indonesia.

The course is designed to help companies function better in the diverse cultures of SEA through understanding how to best work in an environment often perceived of as unstable and personalistic.
