David, this was a great posting series with lots of helpful insights. I have noted and called attention to my readers on Supply Chain Matters:

I enjoyed your two articles on Chinese culture wrt the foreign buyer and quality control.

I find a vast difference in how quality standards are viewed between the Japanese and Chinese. The Japanese seem to have slowly increased their quality standard over time and through their own initiative. There seemed to be a systematic improvement over time, which allowed Japanese products to dominate and Japanese brand names to be the best in their industry.

In contrast I see Chinese companies trying to eek out the most profit as possible, usually resulting in markedly reduced product quality. There seems to be no concerted effort to improve quality, and to produce the best in their industry. How can Chinese companies and brands excel and dominate with such a short-term attitude?

I attribute the differences in quality standards between the two countries to cultural differences. Is my viewpoint unfounded?

Thanks for your interesting posts. I'm not in any business related to yours, but find your blog extremely enlightening--a window into a world that I wouldn't otherwise know. Do you have any insight into food production in China? I ask because of this article from the NY Times:
