The difference is this: a translator will tell you what is being said. But an interpreter tells you what is really going on--they give you the meaning and the context too. You need someone that is fluent in the language/culture so that they can help you navigate the subtle hints and meanings that you don't get from a non-personal translator.

Mr. Dayton!
Thank you very much for this post - it is wonderous!

I have only one question. I am not native english speaker, and i dont quite understand

what is the difference between an interpreter and a translator? what do you mean saying

"If you don’t speak Chinese then you should get a trusted interpreter (not a translator)"

*actually this question has bothered me for many years already, but there is no appropriate answer in books in my country.

Dear Mr. Dayton,

The links posted in the first paragraph of this article are broken--test them by clicking when not signed in to wordpress!

Love the blog, reminds me of unsuccessful days and quality disasters when I was involved in export.

do not ever feel guilty about “doing your job” because your hosts are so polite to you.

That's a good point. The fact that foreigners do so often feel guilty makes the Chinese think we're naive or even stupid.
